Koi Fish Colors, Types and Meanings

There are a few factors that help to determine a type of koi fish.  They are usually identified by <b>koi fish color</b>, markings, patterns and scale variations.  Here are some of the more common types of these wonderful pond fish:

*  Kohaku -      Possibly the most popular type of koi fish.  
                         Colors: red and white
                         Japanese translation:  red and white

*  Asagi:         Colors:     pale blue with orange (or reddish) belly
                        Scales:     net patterned scales on it's back
                       Japanese translation:  pale blue

*  Ogon:         Coloring:  Metallic.  Commonly orange or gold.  Cream coloring is rare.
                       Scales:    One color
                       Japanese translation:  gold

*  Bekko:       Colors:  can be white, yellow or red
                       Markings:  black
                       Japanese translation:  tortoise shell
 
*  Matsuba:   Colors:  one color
                       Scales:  scales look similar to a pinecone

*  Utsuri:        Colors:  Black with white, red, or yellow markings that loiok like ink stains
                       Japanese translation:  to print (think ink stains)

*  karasugoi: Colors:  Black with orange belly

*  Showa:       Colors:  Black body with white and red markings

*  Ochiba:       Colors:  Light blue with yellow markings
                        Japanese translation:  fallen leaves

*  Butterfly:     Colors:  Can be any mix of colors depending on the type of koi that is chosen to breed with
                         the asian carp.  
                         Distinction:  long, flowing fins

Koi fish, overall, are viewed as symbols of love and friendship.  These and other meanings ranging from courage to strength are the reasons that they are such popular symbols being seen on anything from jewelry to tattoos.
