Koi Pond Plants

Koi Pond Plants serve many purposes in your koi pond.  They provide shelter, shade, cover, a spawning habitat, and help to control algae.   The plants help to control algae by competing with the algae for nutrients.

Here are a list of the types of plants you would find in and around an established koi pond.

  • Floating plants.  One example of a floating plant is a water hyacinth.  Floating plants are exactly what they sound like.  They are plants that float around the pond.  They don't need to be rooted down.  Floating plants should take up 60%-70% of the surface of the water.
  • Submersed Plants.  These may also be referred to as oxygenating plants.  Basically, these plants are effective at competing with algae for nutrients and oxygenating the water.
  • Deep water plants.  These include the Lotus and the Water Lilly.  These plants will bloom to the surface and provide a tremendous amount of added beauty to your koi pond.
  • Bog plants.  These plants are planted around the edge of the pond.  They are good for the more shallow portions of the pond.  Some examples of bog plants are cattails and cannas.

Once established, koi pond plants will help to reduce the time and energy maintaining your pond.  And an added bonus, koi plants use koi fish waste as a fertilizer.
